It was wonderful to see the line of people waiting for this book sale to open before 9 o'clock.
There seemed to be somewhat fewer books for sale than last fall because we didn't have any
boxes of books on the floor at opening time, but the quality of the books was terrific. The
customers seemed to agree because sales went rapidly, and we had emptied and moved sixteen tables (out of fifty)
to storage by lunchtime.
We give a Big Thanks to our customers, many of whom return time and again to our book sales to stock up on reading material, read the books, and then donate them for the next book sale. What a great way to recycle books and benefit your library and You! We were swamped with audio/video donations this time, and without realizing until Friday setup time how many tables we could have filled with just the VHS, CD, and DVD items, we didn't have time to get them very well organized. We are going to try to sort through these media items before the next sale, and hopefully will have things a little better set up. If you found empty CD holders or VHS containers with the wrong tape inside in previous sales, we're hoping that you won't be so disappointed in coming sales. Our volunteers still won't have time to listen or watch all of our donated media items to ensure that they work, but at least you won't find them quite so disorderly as before. By the end of the sale at 3 o'clock, we had received $2539. This was great news because we had not known what to expect in this year of economic difficulties. It looks like people are still reading, and are finding that our prices are far better than the cost of new books. We thank Thrivent Financial for again offering to match 50% of our proceeds up to a maximum of $1200. This brought our book sale total to $3739, a wonderful donation for the Almaden Branch Library. Thanks to all of the Friends members who helped us set up for the sale, sold during the sale, and packed up at the end of the sale. Many thanks, also, to our teen helpers who did the heavy lifting to set up the tables on Friday and move boxes of books from the storage room to the tops of tables, and then the reverse operation to clear the room on Saturday afternoon. Behind the scenes, but people without whom the book sales could not be held, were our librarians and staff who arrange for the room and tables, provide our storage space, and give us general assistance whenever we run into a problem. Many thanks to Pam Crider, Ed Koetitz, Harpreet Bola, and others from "the back room." Mark the next book sales on your calendars now:
